Gish Jen’s newest book, The Resisters, is set in the near future in a country called Autoamerica, which is
inspired by Orwell’s 1984. In this dystopian world, a young girl named Gwen (a gifted baseball player from
the lower end of the social spectrum) and her family struggle to maintain their humanity in circumstances
that threaten their every value and even their existence.
